Colorectal Screening - Important Information

 

Medicare Covers Colorectal Cancer Screening

 

Here is some information on some of the procedures that are covered:

  • Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT):
    • Once every 12 months if age 50 or older
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy:
    • Once every 48 months if age 50 or older, or 10 years after a previous screening colonoscopy for those not at high risk
  • Colonoscopy:
    • Once every 10 years (high risk patients - every 2 years) or 4 years after a previous flexible colonoscopy.  No minimum age requirement
  • Barium Enema:
    • Once Every 4 years if age 50 or older (high risk patients - every 2 years) when used instead of a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy
